Daniil Medvedev Wins Almaty Open 2026, the First Title Defence of His Career

Daniil Medvedev kept his Almaty Open title on Sunday, coming from a set down to beat the qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3. It is the first time in his career that he has successfully defended a title, at the fourth attempt, and it is his 25th tour-level title and his fourth of 2026.

A First Title Defence

Medvedev had lost all three of his previous finals as a defending champion. In Almaty he lost a first-set tie-break in which he had a set point, then took control of the second set and served well in the third. “It is just a matter of time, luck, a moment,” he said of finally defending a title. The win also lifts him to fifth in the Race to Turin.

His Route to the Title

Basilashvili Back in the Top 100

Basilashvili, 34, came through qualifying and reached his first tour-level final since 2022. The run takes him back into the top 100 for the first time since February 2023.
