How Qualifying Works
Roland-Garros qualifying is a knockout tournament running in the week before the main draw. The men’s qualifying field of 128 plays three rounds to produce 16 main-draw qualifiers; the women’s field of 96 plays three rounds to produce 16 main-draw qualifiers. A player needs to win three matches in five days to reach the main draw.
The qualifying field is determined by ATP/WTA rankings cutoff approximately six weeks before the tournament. Players ranked roughly 100-300 typically make the qualifying field. Wild cards are awarded by Roland-Garros organisers to French players and selected international talents — these usually go to younger or returning players rather than veterans.

Notable Qualifiers in Recent Roland-Garros Editions
Qualifiers occasionally make deep main-draw runs at Roland-Garros. Recent examples: Yulia Putintseva reached the 2024 quarter-finals; Mirjam Bjorklund made the third round on Roland-Garros debut. The slow clay rewards the kind of construction-game players that the qualifying field tends to produce — meaning watch the qualifier field carefully for first-week storylines in the main draw.
