Zverev Is the One to Beat
Zverev has won two Grand Slam titles this year, Roland-Garros and the US Open, and he clinched the Laver Cup for Team Europe in London by beating Learner Tien 7-6(3), 6-3. He is the top seed and the world No. 2, and nobody else in this field has had a year like it.
The case against is the draw. Novak Djokovic, the six-time champion, is seeded to meet him in the quarter-finals, and Alex de Minaur beat him at the Laver Cup. Zverev is the right favourite, but a top seed at a short price rarely leaves much value, so we want something alongside him.

Alexander Zverev
The form pick. He opens against Cameron Norrie, and nothing in his section before Djokovic should trouble him if he plays to his level of the last four months.
Learner Tien, each-way
Tien reached the final here last year, losing 6-2, 6-2 to Sinner, and returns as the No. 7 seed on a wildcard. He beat Flavio Cobolli at the Laver Cup, and his section is open: Hubert Hurkacz first, then most likely Félix Auger-Aliassime or Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals. He is in the bottom half, away from Zverev and Djokovic, which is exactly where an each-way bet wants to be.
Flavio Cobolli, each-way
The No. 4 seed was runner-up at Roland-Garros and reached a career-high world No. 6 after the Cincinnati semi-finals. His quarter includes Andrey Rublev and Roman Safiullin, who both reached the Hangzhou semi-finals the week before, and de Minaur. A fresh Cobolli has a realistic route to the last four.
The Djokovic Question
Djokovic has the best record in the tournament’s history, with six titles and 29 match wins according to the ATP, but he arrives after a first-round loss to Mariano Navone at the US Open. We would not back him at the price his Beijing record usually earns, and we would not oppose him in a single match either.
Players to Oppose
Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev both reached the Hangzhou semi-finals, and the Hangzhou final is on Tuesday 29 September, the day before Beijing’s main draw starts. Whoever plays that final has almost no time to adjust to a new venue. Medvedev’s opener is against a qualifier, which helps, but we would not back either man for the title.
First-Round Matches Worth a Look
- Alexander Bublik v Jakub Menšík (8): the most unpredictable match in the draw, and Menšík’s serve makes him the safer side.
- Félix Auger-Aliassime (2) v Karen Khachanov: the hardest opener any of the top four seeds has, against a US Open semi-finalist.
- Alex de Minaur (5) v Mariano Navone: Navone beat Djokovic in New York, but de Minaur’s hard-court record makes him the stronger side.
- Learner Tien (7) v Hubert Hurkacz: the first test of whether last year’s run can be repeated.
