Davidovich Fokina Wins Shanghai Masters 2026 for First Masters 1000 Title

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina won the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, coming from a set and a break down to beat his fellow Spaniard Rafael Jódar 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in two hours and 28 minutes. It is the first Masters 1000 title of his career, won as the No. 25 seed.

How the Final Turned

Jódar, the No. 12 seed, dominated the first set. He broke in the second game and again for 5-1, did not face a break point on his own serve and won all seven rallies that went past nine shots. Davidovich Fokina was still a break down at 2-3 in the second set before he broke back. He saved a break point to hold for 4-3, held at 5-4 and 6-5, and took the tiebreak 7-5. After the pair traded breaks early in the third set, Davidovich Fokina broke in the fifth game and served it out.

His Route to the Title

Round Opponent Score
Second round Jenson Brooksby 6-1, 6-3
Third round Frances Tiafoe (7) 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6)
Round of 16 Hubert Hurkacz 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(6)
Quarter-finals Arthur Gea 4-1, retired
Semi-finals Alexander Zverev (1) 5-7, 6-4, 6-3
Final Rafael Jódar (12) 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4

He had a first-round bye as a seed, saved a match point against Tiafoe and came from a set down against Hurkacz, Zverev and Jódar. Zverev, the top seed, said after their semi-final that he had carried an injury and fatigue into the tournament.

Five Finals Lost, Three Won

Davidovich Fokina lost the first five tour-level finals of his career, including his only previous Masters 1000 final, at Monte-Carlo in 2022. He has now won his last three: Mallorca and Chengdu earlier in 2026, and Shanghai. He missed about two months with a back injury before returning in Chengdu in late September, and is on a 10-match winning streak in China. The title is worth 1,000 ranking points and $1,151,380, and lifts him to a career-high No. 13 in the ATP rankings.

Jódar Into the Turin Race

Jódar, 20, rises two places to a joint career-high No. 11 after reaching the final, beating Lehečka, Ruud and Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 on the way. A win would have taken him into the top 10. He leaves Shanghai ninth in the Race to Turin, which puts him inside the cut for the ATP Finals now that Jannik Sinner has ended his season.
