Cincinnati Masters
The Cincinnati Open round of 32 began on Monday 17 August, when rain washed out most of the day’s card and left four matches suspended mid-play, and it is the first round of this tournament where the draw looks nothing like the seeding said it would. Twelve seeds are already gone, including Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton, and seven unseeded players who beat one are still in. Britain’s Arthur Fery took the hardest assignment of the round to a second-set tie-break before Alex de Minaur closed it out, and João Fonseca has withdrawn injured. Six seed-versus-seed ties landed in the men’s draw alone.

De Minaur Ends the British Run
Alex de Minaur beat Arthur Fery 7-5, 7-6(3) in a match rain interrupted four times, and it finished far closer than the draw suggested. De Minaur led 5-1 in the second set and stood a game from a routine win; Fery reeled off five games in a row and forced the tie-break before the fifth seed finally closed it out. British interest in the singles is over.
It caps the season of Fery’s career even so: Australian Open qualifying in January, a Wimbledon semi-final in July — beating Flavio Cobolli and Grigor Dimitrov before Alexander Zverev stopped him — and a top-40 ranking. He heads to the US Open as a seeding-band danger nobody wants in their section.
De Minaur, for his part, has now won a rain-wrecked five-setter’s worth of tennis across two days without playing badly or well, which is its own kind of US Open preparation.

The Match That Decides the Bottom Half
Jaime Faria against Adam Walton is the least glamorous tie of the round and the most consequential. Faria beat Ben Shelton, Walton beat 29th seed Ignacio Buse, and the winner lands in a section that has already lost its top seeds. Neither man has been past the last 16 of a Masters 1000. One of them will be.
Tirante settled the other qualifier tie, beating Landaluce 7-6(3), 7-6(5) to take a round-of-16 place in the quarter that was supposed to belong to Djokovic.

Where the Value Sits
The men’s outright market has moved hard towards Zverev and that is the least interesting bet on the board. The better shape is each-way on a seed who has inherited a thinned-out section. Rafael Jódar strengthened that case by hammering Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 6-1, and João Fonseca‘s withdrawal with an abdominal injury — a worry for his US Open — thins the bottom half further still. Learner Tien arrives with Montreal semi-final form and a retrieval game that drags bigger hitters into long matches in August humidity.
In the women’s draw Elena Rybakina remains the each-way pick. Her serve is the most valuable shot in the draw on a fast hard court, and she is in the same quarter as the defending champion, which means she is priced as though she has to beat Świątek to win the title. That is the bet: the quarter is hard, the rest of the route is not.
On Fery against de Minaur, the handicap and set markets are the sensible way in rather than the outright win. He took a set off nobody’s expectations at Wimbledon and lasted two and a half hours in the previous round, so a competitive first set is the realistic ask.
