US Open
The women’s semi-finals are today, and both are rematches of a sort. Aryna Sabalenka meets Jessica Pegula for the third year running in the closing rounds at Flushing Meadows, after the 2024 final and the 2025 semi-final, and Sabalenka leads that head-to-head 9-4 and 3-0 at the Slams.
Coco Gauff plays Elena Rybakina in the other half, and they are level at 1-1, Rybakina having won the most recent meeting at Toronto in 2026. Gauff came from a set down to beat fifth seed Mirra Andreeva 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2; Rybakina did the same against Zheng Qinwen to end the qualifier’s run.
There is very little between the four of them. Rybakina has conceded 36 games in five matches, Sabalenka 40, Pegula 42 and Gauff 43, and each of them has lost exactly one set except Pegula, who has lost two. The men’s semi-finals follow tomorrow: Zverev v Khachanov and Tiafoe v Shelton.

How Day 11’s bets landed
Three from three, and the Favourites Slip landed with it. Alexander Zverev beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 without ever looking troubled, Elena Rybakina recovered from a set down against Zheng Qinwen, and Karen Khachanov was two sets and a break up when Alexander Blockx retired after an hour and 38 minutes.
The other two slips went down for the reasons they usually do. The Value Slip needed both underdogs to take a set: Zheng did, van de Zandschulp did not. The Straight Sets Slip needed Rybakina to win 2-0 and she lost the opening set, so that one is now seven days without a return, which is roughly the point of it.
The one match we left alone was Gauff v Andreeva, on the grounds that a single game separated them across the fortnight. It went to a third set and a second-set tie-break, which is about as close to correct as a no-bet gets.

The winners meet in Saturday’s final. The men’s semi-finals are tomorrow, Zverev v Khachanov and Tiafoe v Shelton.
Aryna Sabalenka v Jessica Pegula
The third year in a row these two have met in the closing rounds in New York, and Sabalenka has won the previous two: the 2024 final 7-5, 7-5 and the 2025 semi-final 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. She leads the head-to-head 9-4 and has never lost to Pegula at a Grand Slam, 3-0 across the three meetings.
Jessica Pegula has the better recent record, though. She has taken two of the last three, including their most recent at Berlin in 2026, where she won the deciding set without losing a game. Both have been steady here rather than spectacular: Sabalenka is 10-1 in sets with 40 games conceded, Pegula 10-2 with 42, and both needed three sets in the quarter-finals. The record at this event and at this stage is the separator, and it points one way.

Coco Gauff v Elena Rybakina
Elena Rybakina has been the cleanest player in the draw all fortnight: 36 games conceded in five matches, fewer than anyone left, and one set dropped. That set came in the quarter-final against Zheng Qinwen, and she answered it with 6-1, 6-4.
Coco Gauff has the crowd and the better US Open record, having won here in 2023, but she has conceded 43 games and needed a second-set tie-break to survive Mirra Andreeva. The two are level at 1-1 and Rybakina won the most recent meeting, the 2026 Toronto semi-final. On a quick court the serve is the difference: Rybakina’s is the biggest weapon on either side of this draw.

The men’s semi-finals
Both are set, and both are on Arthur Ashe on Friday. Neither is in Day 12’s order of play, but the line-ups are locked and the two head-to-heads are worth reading before they start.
[1] Alexander Zverev v Karen Khachanov
Khachanov has the cleaner run on paper: 15 sets won and 3 lost, against 15-4 for Zverev, who needed five sets in each of his first two matches, against Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys. Zverev has been untroubled since, dropping one set in three rounds and beating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 in the quarter-final. Khachanov’s quarter-final ended early, Alexander Blockx retiring at 6-2, 7-5, 3-2, so he arrives the fresher of the two.
Zverev leads the head-to-head 6-3 and has won three of the last four, and their biggest meeting remains the 2021 Tokyo Olympic final, which Zverev won 6-3, 6-1 for gold. Khachanov’s wins have clustered at the Canadian Open, where he has beaten Zverev twice, most recently in the 2025 semi-final.
[11] Frances Tiafoe v [8] Ben Shelton
An all-American semi-final, and the half of the draw that has produced the tournament’s best tennis. Shelton beat Carlos Alcaraz 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7), closing it out in a final-set tie-break, having already taken out Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 and Denis Shapovalov in four.
Tiafoe got there the hard way too: two sets down to Alex Michelsen in the quarter-final before winning 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(10-6). His cleanest performance was the fourth round, where he beat Daniil Medvedev 7-6(7-1), 6-4, 7-6(8-6) without dropping serve in the tie-breaks that mattered.
Shelton leads the head-to-head 3-1, and two of their four meetings have come at this tournament, split 1-1.
