US Open 2026 Day 8 Predictions, Order of Play & Best Bets

The fourth round starts on Day 8 with eight ties, and the top half of the men’s draw has come apart around it. Ninth seed Taylor Fritz led Francisco Cerúndolo by two sets on Arthur Ashe and lost 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, and fifth seed Flavio Cobolli went out to Alexander Blockx after taking the opening tie-break. Those two were the highest seeds left in their quarters.

The women’s third round took two more big names down. Tenth seed Amanda Anisimova lost 6-2, 7-5 to Anastasia Potapova, and Zheng Qinwen, in the main draw as a qualifier, came from a set down to beat 22nd seed Madison Keys 1-6, 7-6(3), 7-5. Iga Świątek needed two tie-breaks to get past 25th seed Marie Bouzková and now meets Zheng in the last 16.

Day 8 itself is the marquee card. Carlos Alcaraz meets Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton meets Stefanos Tsitsipas on Arthur Ashe, with the winners meeting each other in the quarter-finals. In the bottom half a French lucky loser, Arthur Géa, is into the last 16 and two wins from a semi-final. Aryna Sabalenka faces the unseeded American Taylor Townsend, and Alex Michelsen plays Tomás Martín Etcheverry for a quarter-final place in a section that has lost every seed above them.

How Day 7’s bets landed

The best day of the fortnight, and the value slip was the one that did it.

Both the Seeds Slip and the Value Slip landed in full. The Seeds Slip needed Elena Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva, Coco Gauff and Iga Świątek, and all four won. The Value Slip needed three results the seeding did not favour and got all three: Zheng Qinwen beat Madison Keys from a set down, Botic van de Zandschulp beat 31st seed Zizou Bergs in five, and Learner Tien came from two sets to one down against Jakub Menšík. Two of those three were priced odds-against, which is where the return came from.

The named bets finished two from three. Van de Zandschulp and Zheng Qinwen both came in. The Taylor Fritz call was the miss, and an expensive one: he went two sets up on Francisco Cerúndolo, which is the exact position the tip was built on, and lost three in a row.

The Straight Sets Slip was the only loser. Rybakina won 2-0 and Andreeva won 2-0 as required, so it came down to Fritz to win 3-0, and he did not win at all. That slip has now died on a single leg four days running.

Carlos Alcaraz v Tommy Paul

The defending champion has dropped one set in three matches and 31 games in total, and his third round against Yibing Wu, an 8-game concession, was his cleanest match of the week. That is the form of a man who has not needed a tune-up event after four months out with a wrist injury.

Tommy Paul arrives the other way round. He has dropped four sets, needed five to beat 15th seed Alexander Bublik and has spent a lot longer on court than Alcaraz has. He also took the last two sets of that match 6-1, 6-3, so the finish is there. The question is whether a 20th seed with four sets already gone can live with a player conceding ten games a match, and on this surface the answer is usually no.

Best bet: Carlos Alcaraz to win — odds-on at Betway (approx odds).

Alex Michelsen v Tomás Martín Etcheverry

The most winnable quarter-final place in the men’s draw. Every seed above these two in this section has gone, and the winner meets whoever comes through a half that no longer contains a top-20 player.

Alex Michelsen is unseeded and has not dropped a set: he beat 16th seed Brandon Nakashima in straight sets and then Daniel Mérida, conceding 29 games across three matches, the second-fewest of any man into the fourth round behind only Karen Khachanov. Etcheverry is the 27th seed, has dropped one set and beat Jacob Fearnley and Mariano Navone to get here. The Argentine is the more experienced but the slower-court player of the two, and Michelsen is the one with the free swing.

Best bet: Alex Michelsen to win — priced up at William Hill (approx odds; the market has this close).

Marta Kostyuk v Linda Nosková

The best women’s match on the card and the one the prices undervalue. Linda Nosková is the Wimbledon champion and the sixth seed, but she has already been taken to a second-set tie-break by Ann Li and has dropped 23 games.

Marta Kostyuk has dropped 16 and no sets at all, and her third round was a 6-3, 6-2 win over 18th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova that never looked like turning. Nosková is the bigger name and carries the higher seeding, but Kostyuk is the one arriving with a clean week behind her, and on a quick hard court her flat backhand is the shot most likely to decide it.

Best bet: Marta Kostyuk to win — odds-against at Betfred (approx odds).
