Stefanos Tsitsipas produced the second shock of the tournament, beating Cincinnati champion Arthur Fils 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-4 after trailing by a set and 2-5. The Greek had lost all five previous meetings and struck 50 winners to end the run of the man many had backed to go deep. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz needed no such drama, beating Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, and Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Świątek and Naomi Osaka all came through. Andrey Rublev survived the escape of the day, recovering from two sets down against lucky loser Otto Virtanen.
It was a good Monday for Britain. Harriet Dart beat Peyton Stearns in three and Jacob Fearnley came from two sets to one down to see off Martin Landaluce in four hours and 11 minutes. Qualifier Harry Wendelken lost in four to 21st seed Luciano Darderi. Day 3 completes the first round: top seed Alexander Zverev finally starts, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, Taylor Fritz and Madison Keys are all out, and three more Britons play — Arthur Fery against Lorenzo Musetti, Jan Choinski against Botic van de Zandschulp and Francesca Jones against Magda Linette.

How Day 2’s bets landed
Two of our three best bets came in: Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets and Karolína Muchová, who needed 58 minutes against Sinja Kraus. The third, Arthur Fils to beat Tsitsipas, lost — and it took the long-shot acca down with it. The Seeds Slip (Alcaraz, Sabalenka, Świątek, Shelton) landed at around 4/5, and the Straight Sets Sweep came in too at around 7/2, all three winning without dropping a set. Two from three on the slips, and the one that missed was the one with a real price attached.

Alexander Zverev v Lorenzo Sonego
The top seed has had five days to watch the other half of the draw come apart. Novak Djokovic and Arthur Fils are already gone from the bottom half, and Zverev arrives with the season of his career behind him: a maiden Grand Slam at Roland-Garros and a Wimbledon final. Sonego is a genuine test on a quick court, a big server who beat good players in New York before, and the Italian will make him earn it in the night session. But Zverev has been a US Open finalist and has the return to break Sonego down over five.
Best bet: Alexander Zverev to win — around 1/6 with Bet365 (approx odds).
Daria Kasatkina v Paula Badosa
The pick of the round and the hardest to call. Two former top-10 players, both a little short of their best, meeting in a first round that neither deserved. Kasatkina’s defence and variety drag opponents into long rallies; Badosa hits through the court harder and will try to end points before that happens. Fitness has been the story for both over the last year, so the longer this goes the more it favours Kasatkina’s legs. A three-setter looks likely.
Best bet: Daria Kasatkina to win — around 5/6 with Sky Bet (approx odds).
Arthur Fery v Lorenzo Musetti
Britain’s Fery gets the draw nobody wants. Musetti is the 13th seed and a Roland-Garros semi-finalist, and his one-handed backhand has grown into a weapon rather than a liability on hard courts. Fery is a very different proposition to the wild card of two months ago: he beat Grigor Dimitrov and Flavio Cobolli on his way to the Wimbledon semi-finals, where Zverev stopped him, and he is now British No. 1. Hard courts ask different questions, though, and over five sets the gap in level is still wide. Worth a look at the underdog to take a set.
Best bet: Lorenzo Musetti to win — around 1/6 with Paddy Power (approx odds).
