US Open
Novak Djokovic’s tournament lasted one match. The four-time champion was beaten 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 by Argentina’s Mariano Navone in four hours and 36 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium, vomiting courtside in the closing stages as a 78-match run of Grand Slam opening-round wins came to an end. It is his first first-round exit at a major in more than 20 years. Elsewhere on Day 1, Cameron Norrie became the second seed to fall, beaten in four by Luca Van Assche, and Barbora Krejčíková went out to Kamilla Rakhimova. Britain had better news: Katie Boulter came through in three and Toby Samuel produced the win of his career against Tomáš Macháč.
Day 2 brings the big names out. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz opens against Roman Safiullin on Ashe, where Aryna Sabalenka starts her bid for a third straight title. Iga Świątek and Naomi Osaka play under lights, and the pick of the round sends Stefanos Tsitsipas against Cincinnati champion Arthur Fils. Two Britons are in action: qualifier Harry Wendelken has drawn No.21 seed Luciano Darderi, and Harriet Dart meets Peyton Stearns.

Day 1 Results: Djokovic Falls to Navone in Five
Seventeen men’s first-round matches were completed on Sunday and two seeds went out — one of them the biggest name in the draw. Daniil Medvedev, Jiří Lehečka, Tommy Paul, Alexander Bublik, Arthur Rinderknech and Tomás Martín Etcheverry all came through.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Arthur Fils
The match of the day, and a brutal draw for both. Fils arrives as Cincinnati champion, the biggest title of his career and proof that his game travels on North American hard courts. Tsitsipas is the more decorated player and has reached a US Open fourth round before, but his form since the grass season has been patchy and the backhand remains the wing to attack. Fils has the heavier first strike and the legs to turn this into a physical contest; over five sets on a fast court, that should tell.

Carlos Alcaraz v Roman Safiullin
Alcaraz begins the defence of his title against a man ranked outside the top 90. Safiullin can strike the ball cleanly and has beaten good players on quick surfaces, but he has never gone beyond the third round in New York and the gulf in movement and return quality is enormous. The only question is whether Alcaraz needs four sets to find his range after a light week.
Best bet: Carlos Alcaraz to win in straight sets — around 4/9 with Sky Bet (approx odds).
Karolína Muchová v Sinja Kraus
Muchová is the seventh seed and a former US Open semi-finalist; Kraus is playing her first main-draw match here. When Muchová is fit her variety is a nightmare for anyone without a plan B, and Kraus’ flatter, more predictable ball should give her plenty to work with. The caveat is always the Czech’s body — she has retired or withdrawn more than once this season — so keep the stake sensible.
