US Open 2026 Day 9 Predictions, Order of Play & Best Bets

The fourth round finishes on Day 9, and the top half of the men’s draw has fallen apart so completely that two quarter-final places will go to players seeded 21st or lower. Alexander Zverev is the only seed above 14th left in it, and he has spent 62 games and four sets getting here across two five-setters.

Day 8 took another two seeds out. Eleventh seed Frances Tiafoe beat seventh seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6) without dropping a set, and Alex Michelsen beat 27th seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry to reach his second Grand Slam quarter-final. Michelsen is now the only man left in the draw who has not lost a set all fortnight, and he meets Tiafoe for a semi-final place.

Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka both came through in straight sets and both have a quarter-final already set: Alcaraz meets Ben Shelton, and Sabalenka meets the Wimbledon champion Linda Nosková. Jessica Pegula plays Emma Navarro in an all-American quarter-final.

How Day 8’s bets landed

Two from three on the named bets and nothing on the slips. Carlos Alcaraz beat Tommy Paul in straight sets as expected, and Alex Michelsen came in at around evens against Tomás Martín Etcheverry, which was the pick we most wanted to be right about. The Marta Kostyuk call was the miss: she took the second set off Linda Nosková and lost the third 6-4.

All three slips went down, and the one that stings least is the Seeds Slip. It needed Alcaraz, Sabalenka, Medvedev and Pegula, and three of the four won. The leg that broke it was Medvedev, and the slip itself said to drop that leg if you wanted to shorten it, on the reasoning that Frances Tiafoe in a night session was closer to a coin toss than the price suggested. That is exactly how it played out.

The Value Slip got Michelsen home and lost Kostyuk and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who was beaten in three by Ben Shelton. The Straight Sets Slip had Sabalenka 2-0 and needed Kostyuk and Medvedev, and got neither.

Karen Khachanov v Learner Tien

Khachanov has the cleanest run left in the men’s draw and almost nobody is talking about it. He has dropped 27 games in three matches, fewer than any man still in the tournament, and one set, and the win that got him here was a four-set defeat of third seed Félix Auger-Aliassime. He then beat Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 without fuss.

Learner Tien is the world No. 12 and the 14th seed, and he has the harder week behind him: five sets against 17th seed Jakub Menšík, in which he lost the second 1-6 and the third on a tie-break before taking the last two. Tien is the better mover of the two and has the crowd, but Khachanov is the bigger server on a quick court and has spent 13 fewer games on court.

Best bet: Karen Khachanov to win — priced up at Betway (approx odds).

Elena Rybakina v Naomi Osaka

The tie of the day and a meeting of two major champions. Elena Rybakina won the Australian Open in January, beating Aryna Sabalenka in the final, and has come through this fortnight without losing a set, conceding 20 games in three matches.

Naomi Osaka is a two-time champion here and the 13th seed, and she has done it the hard way: two tie-breaks to get past Anastasia Zakharova, three sets against Kateřina Siniaková and then 7-5 in the third against 23rd seed Elise Mertens. On this surface Osaka at her best beats anyone, but 36 games and two lost sets against Rybakina’s 20 and none is a gap that usually tells.

Best bet: Elena Rybakina to win — odds-on at William Hill (approx odds).

Arthur Géa v Botic van de Zandschulp

A lucky loser against a man who has built a career out of ruining big names in New York, and the winner is a Grand Slam quarter-finalist. Arthur Géa lost in the final round of qualifying and got into the main draw as a lucky loser, and has since won three matches including two five-setters, the last of them from two sets to one down against the American wild card Michael Zheng.

Botic van de Zandschulp reached the quarter-finals here as a qualifier in 2021 and knocked out Carlos Alcaraz in 2024, so the stage is not the problem. He has beaten sixth seed Alex de Minaur and 31st seed Zizou Bergs to get here, dropping two sets to Géa’s five, and he has 56 games of Géa’s court time to work against.

Best bet: Botic van de Zandschulp to win — odds-on at Betfred (approx odds).
